Just for today……do not worry

Just for today….do not anger

Just for today….honor your elders

Just for today….show gratitude for every living thing!

The 2016 show year is gone and the 2017 show year is upon us.  The 2017 USDF, DSDCTA and Local Chapter Memberships are due.  The 2016 year has quickly come and gone and I’m wondering where it went, as I’m sure many of the members are.

The 2016 year brought many changes to our local chapters and DSDCTA.  One of the most unfortunate changes, especially for ECC who hosted the camps each year and those of the DSDCTA membership who participated in the Adult Horse Camps, is the closing of Timpoochee.  The closing of Timpoochee has happened in the past, but from what I’ve been told Timpoochee will no longer be available for the Adult Horse Camps.  As Jane Nicholes stated in the September 2003 TEMPO, “We’ll all miss the setting, and we’ll treasure our waterfront camp photos, but Timpoochee offered certain, shall we say, unique challenges such as speed boats, children and adults from other event groups trooping down below the levee beside the ring with balloons and fishing poles bobbing above.  We won’t miss the less than sturdy stalls that warmbloods barely fit in to (which ECC tried to fix each year), the attempts to maneuver large horse trailers, the monster biting flies and the worry about how much of the riding ring had fallen into the bay during the last tropical storm.”  Never-the less, we will all certainly miss Timpoochee!

The next major change for DSDCTA is the retiring of Mary Jane Benson from DSDCTA!  For thirteen years or maybe more, Mary Jane has hosted many DSDCTA rated and schooling dressage, jumping, sport horse shows, clinics, workshops, lectures, etc.  Some of these were the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital Benefit Schooling Show each year.  She hosted the USDF “L” Learner Judge Series, USDF   Sport Horse In Hand Series,  Advanced Workshops, Dressage Naturally with Karen Rolf, Sally Swift Centered Riding Clinic, Driving Clinic with Sterling Graburn,  Bill Woods Clinic and many more equine events I know I’m leaving out.  Mary Jane also was a tireless volunteer and Board member.  Whenever DSDCTA had an event Mary Jane was there to volunteer in any way possible.  She was an intricate part of making both of the DSDCTA Regional Finals a success as well as the USDF Adult Series Clinics.  We will miss Mary Jane very much, along with her never ending energy, equine expertise, and insight.  I hope she will continue as a member of DSDCTA .   Myself and all of DSDCTA wishes her the best in her future endeavors.

Now on to happier things…….that have occurred in 2016.  Congratulations to all our DSDCTA  winning members at our Rated and Schooling Shows this year who will be honored at our awards banquet.   Congratulations to Kimmie Taylor (ECC and NW), Jodi Kelly (ECC) and Tracy True (HC) for successfully competing at our USDF Region 3 Finals, being invited to the Finals in Kentucky and the USDF Convention!  Besides the two rated DSDCTA Blue Angel Shows hosted by ECC and FLBA, and the DSDCTA Schooling Shows at Willowbend, we also had a very successful Adult Horse Camp!  Many of the Chapters had successful clinics, quadrilles, lectures by equine professionals, outings to equine events such as Red Hills Horse Trials, Western Dressage Clinics and Shows, as well.  The 2015 Annual Awards Banquet and Membership Meeting at the Sandestin Hotel, hosted by FLBA, was an absolute success and a lot of fun for all.  Natalie Lamping who is an international judge, equestrian and clinician, was the speaker.  Natalie’s speech was educational and we were able to take her insights and information back to our chapters.  If you decided to stay overnight you were able to experience the Wharf beside the hotel.  Fresh oysters, clams, music, specialty shops, etc made for a great Saturday night with terrific DSDCTA friends.

This year our 2016 Annual Awards Banquet and Membership Meeting is again being held at the Sandestin Hotel, in Destin, on Saturday, January 14th, from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and hosted by ECC.  If you feel you were left out of the festivities last year, you can participate this year.  Our very own USDF Region 3 Regional Director, Sue Bender, who resides in Georgia, will be our guest speaker.  Our DSDCTA Awards Chair, Sherri Mallory, is putting together a slide presentation of all our DSDCTA members and their equines from different events held throughout the year.  Please send Sherri any photographs you would like to be included in this presentation.  Sherri has also sponsored some wonderful gift items for each table place setting at the luncheon.  There will also be a Silent Item Auction, so don’t forget to bring an item to be auctioned off.  The lunch menu will be:  1. I hope to see everyone at the Awards Banquet and Membership Meeting!  If possible, please make time to attend the Board Meeting after the banquet.

The 2017 year should be bigger and better for the members of DSDCTA.  A Championship Schooling Show is already planned for September 26 at Joint Venture Farm in Madison, FL.  There will be a clinic on Friday for those members not participating in the show and on Sunday too.  The judge will be announced at a later time.  The DSDCTA Board has been discussing an Equine Expo and possible Regional Finals in the future of DSDCTA.  Our new DSDCTA Website is up and running….please check it out at dsdcta.org.  Each chapter has their own page for updates and chapter information.  We are scheduling a Webinar on December 10 at Sherri Mallory’s law office for everyone to become more acquainted with the new website.  Northwest Chapter of DSDCTA has a new President, Tiffany Hull. There will be a Membership Meeting on November 19 in Chipley, FL.  This meeting has been postponed until after the DSDCTA banquet and holidays, since many members were unable to attend, but communicated the desire to join for the new year.

This year is the end of the two year term of office for your DSDCTA Board Officers.  The Board will be voting on a new slate by December 15.   Kimmie Taylor will be calculating the nominations and votes.  If the voting goes in my favor, I am looking forward to another 2 years as your DSDCTA president.  Remember, each Chapter President and two Chapter Members, called Liaisons, are members of the DSDCTA Board and have voting privileges.  These chapter representatives communicate your questions, wishes and desires for what you want your GMO to do for you!

I would like to end with a quote from an old friend of mine, Eugene Abello, who at the time of this interview had taken over the Presidency of The Miami Dade Dressage Association because I was moving to N FL.  In the interview Eugene was asked if he had anything else to say and he responded by saying,  ”I would like to say we are very lucky to look at the world from the horse’s back.  We should never take for granted the fact that we have a partnership of such depth and importance with another species on this little planet which is hurtling through the galaxy.  I am in awe of that on a regular basis!”

Wishing all our DSDCTA members and families a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Your DSDCTA President, Ruthanne Faine-Gardner 850-929-4991  kosakejv@yahoo.com
